Honoring and preserving the animal-human bond

ElderDog Canada Inc. is a national, registered Charitable Organization dedicated to aging people, aging dogs, and the important connection they enjoy. Our purposes are to:

  • Assist and support older adults in the care and well-being of their canine companions;
  • Promote the welfare of older dogs whose lives have been disrupted due to illness, relocation or death of a human companion;
  • Educate about the human-animal bond in general and the significant role of companion animals in the health and well-being of seniors;
  • Support and conduct research into the human-animal bond with a focus on seniors and canine companionship.

ElderDog Pawds are located across Canada, including the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.

What We Do

Dog Care Support for Seniors

Our goal is to enable older adults living at home and with challenges affecting dog care to continue to benefit from their relationship with their canine companions. With the help of our volunteers, ElderDog provides a range of no-cost assistance and  supports, including:

  • assisting seniors with exercising their dogs;
  • delivering or picking up dog food from a grocery or pet store;
  • light tasks associated with animal hygiene;
  • minor grooming such as nail clipping or help with brushing;
  • transportation to and from the vet or groomer;
  • temporary foster care during hospitalization or periods when they are unable to care for their dog in the home.

Long-term care for dogs

For dogs who have lost a human companion due to a residence change, illness or death and are left without a caregiver, ElderDog works to provide care and companionship through:

  • Foster care in an approved foster home;
  • Adoption to an approved home.

ElderDog provides loving homes for older dogs to live out their lives with the dignity they deserve. Where possible, we endeavour to rehome older dogs with older people who want the loving companionship of an older dog.

Volunteers

Our organization is run by volunteers and provides services at no cost to our elder clients & their dogs.

ElderDog is looking for volunteers who are interested in working with elders and their animals as part of any of these  activities:

  • Dog Care Support for Seniors
  • Foster Dog Care
  • Administration, Social Media, Communications
  • Leadership Opportunities - Coordinating volunteers with seniors & dogs; Pawd Leaders
