BIO/BACKGROUND
Mary Catherine Williams has worked with United Way British Columbia since January 2022 in the Central and North Vancouver Island Region as a Community Impact and Investment Coordinator. Prior to joining UWBC, Mary Catherine was the Executive Director of Volunteer Campbell River and worked with Volunteer BC and Volunteer Canada on a number of current issues in the volunteer sector including diversity and reconciliation. She has many years of experience in community development and volunteer management, as well as being a lifelong volunteer.
Since joining UWBC, Mary Catherine's role is to help support communities and service organizations to receive the support and funding they need to do important work caring for vulnerable people specifically in the area of seniors, child and youth mental health, food security, housing and emergency response. She is also involved in introducing UWBC's iVolunteer program to organizations and volunteers across Central and North Vancouver Island. Mary Catherine brings over 30 years of experience working with children and families with complex needs, and communities, to promote well-being, safety and success. She has collaborated in community development initiatives with a focus on mental health and addictions prevention and supports, reconciliation and community resilience. Mary Catherine has been a college instructor, workshop presenter, and consultant on various community development and diversity projects locally, provincially and nationally. Mary Catherine is a settler of British, Irish and German descent and her husband is Interior Salish and Metis/Cree. She respectfully acknowledges that she is a guest and so thankful to live, work, play and volunteer in the unceded, traditional territory of the Laichwiltach People.

SUMMARY: Having difficult conversation with volunteers: When difficulties arise with a volunteer or in a volunteer program, it is important to address these in a proactive and timely way. Sometimes, with support and coaching, the problem can be minimized or solved but other times more action will be needed. This workshop will explore why problems may develop and effective steps to take to solve the issues.
