Pitstop is a program run by Kamloops United Church where volunteers come together every Sunday to provide a nutritious meal for the members in our community who are struggling with food insecurity. Teams of volunteers help to prepare hot meals, sandwiches, and goody bags to hand out at no cost to members of the community.  

The volunteers prepare this hot meal in the kitchen, package it into individual meal containers, and are ready to hand it out. As the organization is 100% volunteer-driven, people from different organizations, clubs, agencies, churches, etc., come together to make and serve these meals and goody bags. 

This is the right role for you if you are someone who:

Likes to serve and help someone who might not be able to pay you back 

A Hot Meal Prep Volunteer’s main tasks are: 

Helping with meal prep 

Packaging the meal into individual containers 

Loading up the containers in a thermal box 

Cleaning and clearing the area after the activities, 

No prior experience is needed! 

Time commitment: 

The Hot meals are prepared at CMHA Rosethorn Kitchen, 259 Victoria Street West, from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm every Sunday (this is a temporary location). 

Volunteering in this role offers you: 

The opportunity to support individuals facing food insecurity. 

An official reference from us as a recognized volunteer. 

Social service experience in helping those who are homeless.  

Note: Hot Meal Prep volunteers are one element of the PITStop team. You can also apply to join the Meal Outreach position to help hand out the meals and goody bags the team makes!

As a Goody Bag Prep Volunteer, you’ll play a key role in preparing small bags filled with snacks, drinks, and essentials that are handed out alongside our Sunday meals. This behind-the-scenes role ensures that every guest receives not only a hot meal but also a little extra support for the days ahead. 

This is the right role for you if you are someone who: 

 Enjoys working with your hands and being part of a team. 

 Wants to support your community in a tangible, meaningful way 

 Likes to socialize and connect with the community partners 

Cares about someone else's well-being   

Wants to build and develop team spirit 

Likes to serve and help someone who might not be able to pay you back 

AGoody Bag Prep Volunteer’s main tasks are: 

 Packing goody bags with care and consistency. 

 Keeping the prep area clean and organized. 

 Making peanut butter and jam sandwiches 

Sorting and washing fruits 

 Buttering buns 

 Sorting and bagging sweets (muffins, chocolates, cookies, cakes etc.) 

Preparing iced tea, lemonade, or sorting juice boxes 

Bag all these items into a ready-to-go bag. 

Cleaning and clearing the area after the activities, 

No prior experience is needed! 

Time commitment: 

Goody bags are put together at Kamloops United Church, 421 St Paul Street, from 12:30 to 3 pm every Sunday. We ask that volunteers commit to coming through the back door of the Church.

 A team-based, low-pressure environment to volunteer in 

 An official reference from us as a recognized volunteer. 

Social service experience in helping those who are homeless.  

 Humanitarian experience supporting those struggling with mental health and substance use addiction 

The opportunity to create an impact in the community. Note: Goody bag volunteers are one element of the PITStop team. You can also apply to join the Meal Outreach position to help hand out the meals and goody bags the team makes!

During the Meal Outreach session, volunteers help hand out the hot meal, goody bags, drinks, water, freezes, coffee, iced tea/lemonade, etc. to the guests. Volunteers also help to clear up the serving location when everything is done.

A Meal Outreach Volunteer’s main tasks are: 

Handing out meals  

Handing out goody bags 

Serving coffee, Hot Chocolate and other drinks  

Cleaning and clearing the area after the activities. 

No prior experience is needed! 

Time commitment: 

The Meal outreach takes place at Kamloops United Church Parking Lot, 421 St. Paul Street, from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm every Sunday (this is a temporary location).
