Volunteer: Kitchen Prep & Clean

The Mustard Seed is a Christian non-profit organization that has been caring for individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty since 1984. Operating in seven cities across Western Canada, The Mustard Seed is a supportive haven where people can have their physical, mental, and spiritual needs met and grow toward greater health and independence. 
 

Kitchen Prep & Serve Volunteers at The Mustard Seed assist our kitchen team in preparing and serving meals for our guests. You will receive instruction and supervision from experienced kitchen staff members, allowing you to gain hands-on experience in meal preparation and serving. Your efforts will ensure that our guests receive tasty, healthy dishes and enjoy a positive dining experience. 

This is the right role for you if you are someone who: 

You are passionate about creating delicious and nutritious meals Interest in food preparation and willingness to learn new culinary skills. Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow instructions from kitchen staff. Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining cleanliness and food safety standards. Physical ability to stand for extended periods and perform tasks related to meal preparation and kitchen cleaning. Respect for food safety protocols and adherence to health and safety guidelines. 

A Kitchen Prep & Clean Volunteer’s main tasks are: Work alongside kitchen staff members to prepare a variety of tasty and healthy dishes using a hands-on approach.Receive instruction and supervision from kitchen staff in portioning and plating meals for our guests. Assist in cleaning the kitchen before and after lunch service, ensuring a hygienic and organized environment. Collaborate with the kitchen team to maintain cleanliness and food safety standards throughout meal preparation and service. Follow instructions and guidelines provided by kitchen staff to ensure quality and consistency in meal preparation. 

Onsite training is provided upon the first volunteer shift; this training is specific to the position. Online training is provided prior to the first shift; this training relates to the work the Mustard Seed does and engaging with individuals who are considered vulnerable.  


Time commitment: 

We ask that volunteers commit to approximately 2-3 hour shifts every 2 weeks and consider committing to a 3-6 month period.

Volunteer: Thrift Store – Sorting & Stocking

As a Sorting & Stocking Volunteer at The Mustard Seed Thrift Store, you will be responsible for sorting, stocking, and cleaning donations to ensure a well-organized and appealing store environment. Your tasks will include separating men's and women's fashions, shoes, accessories, and household items, identifying wearable items, and working closely with trained staff to stock shelves and maintain cleanliness. 


This is the right role for you if you are someone who: 


Are you detail-oriented and passionate about supporting community initiatives? 



Good eye for detail and ability to identify wearable items and items not worthy of retail display. 



Physical ability to lift and move boxes or bags of donated items (up to a certain weight limit). 



Team player with a positive attitude and willingness to contribute to store operations. 



Respect for confidentiality and privacy regarding donor and customer information. 



Commitment to promoting sustainability and supporting community initiatives. 


A Thrift Store Volunteers main tasks are: 


Sort donated items such as clothing, shoes, accessories, and household goods into designated categories (e.g., men's, women's). Identify wearable items and items not suitable for retail display, maintaining a high standard of quality. Assist in stocking shelves and displays with sorted merchandise under the guidance of trained staff. Collaborate with staff to ensure merchandise is organized, appealing, and easily accessible to customers. Perform light cleaning duties such as dusting, sweeping, and cleaning furniture to maintain a tidy store environment No Experience required 

Time commitment: 

We ask that volunteers commit to approximately 1 shift every 2 weeks, for a 3–6-month commitment period.
