Volunteer Opportunity: Event & Fundraising Volunteer Team Member

Intent of Program
Seniors Services Society of BC (SSSBC) is seeking volunteers to support community events and fundraising initiatives that enhance programs for seniors. Volunteers will help plan and deliver events that build community connection and generate resources to sustain and grow services.

SSSBC is currently building a dedicated Event & Fundraising Volunteer Team. Volunteers will play a key role in shaping and supporting upcoming initiatives.

Duties

Assist with planning and organizing fundraising and community events (e.g., Walk of Ages, social events, campaigns) Support event logistics including setup, registration, guest support, and cleanup Participate in outreach activities to promote events and encourage community involvement Support promotion of events through outreach efforts, including occasional assistance with SSSBC social media and community postings Assist with donor engagement activities such as preparing materials, thank-you communications, and follow-ups Support tracking of event participation and basic reporting Attend volunteer meetings and planning sessions as required Represent SSSBC in a professional, friendly, and inclusive manner Maintain confidentiality and follow SSSBC volunteer policies

Qualifications

19 years of age or older Interest in community events, fundraising, or nonprofit work Strong organizational and communication skills Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team Friendly, reliable, and flexible Previous experience in events, fundraising, customer service, or volunteering is an asset but not required

Requirements

Criminal record check (mandatory) Provide current resume Provide two references

Commitment

Minimum 4–6 month commitment preferred Flexible scheduling based on event timelines Availability for occasional evenings or weekends

Training & Support

Orientation to SSSBC programs, policies, and event procedures Ongoing guidance from staff Opportunity to develop skills in event planning, community engagement, and fundraising

Volunteer: Medical Transport Driver

Intent of Program

To provide assistance and transportation for seniors to and from their medical appointments.

Duties

Arrive at client’s home as scheduled. Enter client's home to give necessary mobility assistance from home to vehicle. Engage in conversation with client. Accompany client to the physician/specialist office to assist with mobility. Remain in office until appointment finishes. Drive client back home, assist with mobility as necessary. Maintain and submit mileage/parking sheets. Submit to Support Services Coordinator on a monthly basis. Report any issues/concerns to Support Services Coordinator.

Qualifications

Competent navigator Ability to understand and be understood in English Good Interpersonal Skills: friendly, courteous, patient Ability to work independently Capacity to maintain confidentiality Able to communicate in a clear and effective manner Punctual and reliable Be physically able to assist clients should it be required (arm assistance) Able to consistently drive defensively and obey traffic laws and speed limits. Willingness to drive without distractions (Cell phone, texting, ear pods, eating while driving).

Criminal record check mandatory. Must be renewed every 5 years. Provide reference checks Have a minimum five years of driving experience Calling in if unable to make it for a scheduled shift Drivers must have a current driver’s license and abstract Be responsible for the upkeep and safety of the vehicle Must have own vehicle-clean and in good repair Able to provide a smoke free environment Have access to a phone $3 million Extended Third Party Liability coverage Responsible for ensuring insurance is renewed on a yearly basis  Driver’s Abstract and Owner’s Certificate of Insurance and Vehicle License to be submitted on a yearly basis. Driver’s License – a copy is required. Upon renewal, new copy is required.

Minimum 6 months commitment Appointments are made Monday – Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm (occasional evening or Saturday). Flexible Schedule.

Volunteer Position - Grocery Order taker

Intent of Program - To provide a supported shopping service to seniors who face multiple barriers making it difficult to shop for groceries and daily essentials.

Duties - Make calls from a given list of clients. Follow instructions outlined in the instructional manual on how to place orders. Input the  client's grocery order using the on-line shopping program.

Qualifications - Basic computer skills. Ability to speak  and understand English. Must be able to use the internet and communicate via email and telephone. Good interpersonal skills: friendly, courteous, patient. Ability to work independently Capacity to maintain confidentiality. Able to communicate in a clear and effective manner. Punctual and reliable. Detail orientated.

Requirements - Mandatory criminal record check. Must be renewed every 5 years. Provide two references.

Commitment required - One weekday morning, weekly; starting at 9:30am; approx. 2 hours

Benefits - Connecting with people. Giving back to the community. Reference letter after 6 months of service.

Training required - Volunteer orientation. Program training provided by Support Services Program Coordinator (approx. 1 hr.) Additional training as required.

Duties: From home, contact the clients via telephone. Engage the clients in a friendly, social conversation, Ideally up to 25 minutes long. Provide appointment reminders. Notice any health or emotional changes. Report any issues/concerns to Support Services Program Coordinator. Access emergency intervention for client if needed. Communicate closely and regularly with the Support Services Program Coordinator.

Qualifications: Ability to understand and speak English. Must be able to use the internet and communicate via email. Good interpersonal skills: friendly, courteous, patient. Ability to work independently. Capacity to maintain confidentiality. Able to communicate in a clear and effective manner. Punctual and reliable. Comfortable dealing with emotional issues/topics. Ability to initiate and sustain conversation. Be in good mental health.

Requirements: Mandatory criminal record check. Must be renewed every 5 years. Provide two references. 

Commitment required: One or more mornings per week; starting at approx. 9:30am for approx. 2-3 hrs. Minimum 6 months of service.
