Volunteer: West Kootenay Volunteer Driver Program - Drivers Wanted

Based in Castlegar and District Community Service Society and serving the area from Nakusp and down to Castlegar, Nelson, Grand Forks and areas in between.  The West Kootenay Volunteer Driver Program connects drivers and people requiring transportation across the West Kootenays - primarily for medical appointments and when other methods of transportation are not available or accessible.

Volunteer: Nakusp - Volunteer Drivers Wanted for the Medical Bus

The ASLCS Community Medical Bus travels to the Okanagan (stops in Vernon and Kelowna) on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month.

We are seeking drivers with a class 4 unrestricted license to take on some shifts from our long term drivers who are getting ready to retire from driving. 

Ideally, this position will appeal to retired or semi-retired persons with some flexibility, wishing to help out their community and engage with members of our village as they travel out of town for medical and social needs.  Occasional trips around town - such as Christmas lights tours, travel to special events and designated driving are also required.  

Drivers are given an honorarium to cover meals on travel days.

Arrow & Slocan Lakes Community Services Friendly Visiting volunteers help seniors who live in the following areas: Nakusp, Burton, Fauquier, Edgewood and surrounding areas. Our Better at Home programs support seniors with simple, day-to-day tasks that allow them to live independently and remain connected to their communities.

What you will be helping with:

·Grocery shop for a senior’s needs. Volunteers either shop with a senior on a given day, or receive a list and have 1-3 days to complete the shop and deliver it to the senior’s home.

Other Helpful Information:

Select shifts that meet your availability.

·In most cases, you must have access to a vehicle, however for some this may not be necessary.

·This volunteer role would be a good fit for those with some free time during daytime (store opening) hours.

By connecting with seniors for some friendly company, caring volunteers can significantly reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness, making a real difference in a senior’s life.

What you will be helping with:

Meeting with a senior 1-2 times monthly in person and/or by phone.Collaborating with the senior to plan the activity you want to do together.Simple activities could include having friendly conversations, walking in the neighbourhood, colouring, simple art projects, baking, having coffee or tea, playing cards or a game, reading, watching TV and talking about the program afterward, and connecting the senior with community resources.
