Looking for a fun, meaningful way to give back? The Canucks Autism Network (CAN) is calling on enthusiastic volunteers to help us create lasting memories and build inclusive communities across BC! 

Since 2008, CAN has been empowering individuals on the autism spectrum and their families through programs that promote acceptance, belonging, and inclusion. Now, we want YOU to be part of that impact. 

Program Volunteer’s support CAN program participants to be as successful as possible in the program. This includes support with appropriate behavior, social interaction, communication and encouraging independent participation. If you are patient, enjoy working within a team, and driven by a strong desire to create accessibility in sport & recreation - we want you! 

This is the right role for you if you are someone who: 

  • Is fun, enthusiastic, motivated, and a positive team player 

  • Has excellent people skills and ability to proactively build positive relationships with participants 

  • Has a passion to get involved,  

  • Is eager to learn and open to receiving feedback 

  • Is patient, collaborative, adaptable, and respectful of children and families 

  • Has strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills  

  • Is punctual and reliable 

The ideal volunteer will proactively and enthusiastically engage with their assigned participant(s), while using all applicable strategies/practices as outlined by CAN. 

Training and Requirements 


  • Relevant post-secondary education and/or experience supporting autistic individuals (or other diverse needs) an asset, but not required

  • If you are applying for a swim program, you must feel comfortable in all depths of the pool  
  • If volunteering for a Youth & YA program/event, you must be at least 18 years of age 


Under the direction of Onsite Supervisors, volunteers are expected to assist Support Workers and Coaches as they move through lessons and encourage skill development that has been specifically designed to promote physical and social development of children on the autism spectrum.  

 


A Program Volunteer’s main tasks are: 

  • Provide support to participants alongside Support Workers & promote active engagement & learning 

  • Ensure participant engagement through positive reinforcement (ex. high-fives, words of encouragement, etc.)   

  • Encourage participants to independently partake in activities 

  • Follow the direction of the Onsite Supervisor & Skills Coach to ensure the success of each program session 

  • Closely adhere to the lesson plans delivered by the Skills Coach & adapt to participant(s) needs as required 

  • Facilitate peer to peer interaction and socialization amongst program participants 

  • Have fun!


  • Time commitment: 

    Our Swim programs are 8 weeks in length for 2 or 2.5 hours (once/week). Volunteers that can attend all program weeks are strongly preferred and will receive priority.  

     


    Our Swim Programs runs on Tuesday and Sunday from 4pm till 6 or 6:30pm. It’s the perfect chance to stay active, meet new people, and make a difference!
