Volunteers needed to help dig up blackberries at two parks in northeast Langley with the Glen Valley Watersheds Society.
We alternate between three parks each Tuesday from 10:00-12:00pm until April 9, this opportunity is for Milaster Passive Park. Contact stewardship@leps.bc.ca for information or to register if you are not an iVolunteer member.
LEPS will provide gloves and equipment but if you wish to bring your own gloves or shovel please feel free!
Milaster Passive Park: 7090 272 St, access is just north of Nathan Creek bridge on 272 St, follow long driveway along Nathan Creek and into this undeveloped park.
Other parks on other Tuesdays:
- West Creek Wetlands Park: access is on the south side of 72 Ave just west of 264 St (approx. 26200 72 Ave), watch for cars parked on the side of the road. We are controlling blackberries in this park reserve that isn't open to the public to benefit the natural ecosystem. 2024 is the 9th year of this project with the GVWS.
- Nathan Creek Wetlands Park: access at the end of 80 Ave west of 272 St. This small park was once a homestead filled with fruit trees and grape vines. We are controlling the blackberries so the food can be harvested by community members. 2024 is the third season controlling blackberries at this site.
Himalayan/Armenian and Evergreen blackberries are invasive species and can outcompete our native plants creating ecosystems that can no longer support a variety of wildlife. Controlling blackberries involves cutting them down and digging up the roots.
