Volunteer: Share Peace with Mandala Rocks!

Ever wanted to make a difference or share some local love in your community but didn't know where to start?

We're here to help! These easy Hi Neighbour volunteer activities will spark joy and inspire others in your community!

What is a Hi Neighbour volunteer activity?

Hi Neighbour volunteer activities are self-directed new and easy ways to get involved in your community. And they're fun to do!

We've created accessible ways for individuals to volunteer and pay it forward through a number of activities that can be done individually or by connecting with like-minded people.

We're inviting the residents of Princeton to join our volunteer team and help us create a positive impact in Princeton. Sign up to be a part of Princeton's Hi Neighbour volunteer community!

Here's how this works:

Gather your friends and turn this activity into a party, or do it on your own.

When you're done, take photos of your neighbourhood beautification project and send them to Princeton's Hi Neighbour's team, Tanya and Kaileigh. Share details of where to find your work of art, and they'll share it on our social channels. You and your project could be featured in iVolunteer's newsletter to inspire others to create local love where they live!

The activity:

Create colourful and mesmerizing mandala rocks of all shapes and sizes. Use this beginner's guide to get you started. When you've painted a few mandala rocks, you can place them in communal areas in your neighbourhood like a greenway, or a park.

And if you're feeling ambitious, paint a few mandala rocks and create a mandala rock garden feature in your neighbourhood for everyone to enjoy!

Got your own idea that you'd like to try out? Contact Tanya and Kaileigh to talk about it and get started!

Volunteer: Help a Neighbour

Ever wanted to make a difference or share some local love in your community but didn't know where to start?

We're here to help! This easy Hi Neighbour volunteer activity will inspire others in your community to get involved!

The activity:

Our neighbourhoods feel pretty special when we're looking out for each other. But the first step is getting to know one another. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Spend time outside – this is where it all begins. Stop to say hello to neighbours you meet while walking in your neighbourhood. Introduce yourself, your family, and your pet, and see where the conversation goes. Have a ten-minute general conversation with neighbours who speak English as a second language. On garbage collection day, offer to bring the trash cans out for the senior or the mom of a toddler. Swap produce or flowers from your garden with your neighbours. Help with a neighbour's outdoor home improvement project. Ask for a small favour that your neighbour can help with. Get involved with a neighbourhood group or association. Offer to walk your neighbour's dog. Write positive, inspirational comments on your neighbourhood social media page to encourage uplifting conversation threads. Meeting people online can be a good place to start too! Connect with your United Way Community Builder to learn more about your local United Way Hi Neighbour initiative.

If you need help planning your activity, contact Tanya and Kaileigh

Not sure where to start? This resource will guide you through setting up your Neighbourhood Emergency Hub.

Volunteer: Start a Community Wishing Tree!

Ever wanted to make a difference or share some local love in your community but didn't know where to start?

We're here to help! These easy Hi Neighbour volunteer activities will spark joy and inspire others in your community!

Here's how this works:

Pick an activity from the list below (we've included links to DIY resources); gather your friends and turn it into a party, or do it on your own.

Start a community Wishing Tree for neighbours and friends to hang wishes and uplifting messages of hope for your community.

Select a tree in your neighbourhood that is visible to everyone - it could be in your own front yard or on a sidewalk. Get together with friends and family and write messages on paper tags or make them permanent wishes on wood tags that are light enough to be tied to your community Wishing Tree's branches and sway in the breeze.

Take it one step further:

Leave markers, tags and yarn in a weatherproof box at the base of the tree Create a sign that encourages passersby to write their wishes or stop to read the tags, admire the tree, and be inspired.

Need some inspiration? Take a look at these community quotes

Kindness stones are simply rocks with uplifting messages painted on them.  Sprinkle kindness stones throughout your neighbourhood for neighbours to take, leave them on your neighbour's doorstep, or place them on park benches!

Use this activity to uplift your community and spread some kindness! Here's a complete resource guide to inspire kindness and get you started.

And if you're feeling ambitious, paint a few kindness stones and create a "kindness" garden feature in your neighbourhood for everyone to enjoy and to inspire others!

Got your own idea that you'd like to try out? Contact Tanya and Kaileigh to talk about it and get started!
