Volunteer: Dementia Navigator (NavCARE) Volunteer

Brella Community Services Society is seeking caring, empathetic, and resourceful individuals to join our Nav-CARE program as a Nav-CARE Dementia Navigator Volunteer. In this role, you'll provide regular support to older adults—particularly those living with dementia and their caregivers—through compassionate visits, advocacy, and community navigation assistance.

Whether it’s listening with empathy, helping someone access community resources, or simply being a steady, friendly presence, your time can make a lasting difference in someone’s life. Visits are typically 1–2 hours bi-weekly and are scheduled based on your availability. Clients are located in the White Rock and South Surrey area. 

About Nav-CARE:
Nav-CARE stands for Navigation: Connecting, Accessing, Resourcing, and Engaging. This national program was developed to support older adults living with chronic illness, dementia, or increasing frailty by helping them stay connected, informed, and emotionally supported. Volunteers in this program, known as navigators, are specially trained to provide compassionate listening, help individuals access local resources, and accompany them through life’s changes.

At Brella, this role is ideal for someone seeking a deeper volunteer experience—it’s like an enhanced Friendly Visitor role, with additional training and opportunities. Our Nav-CARE volunteers play a vital role in fostering meaningful community connections and reducing social isolation.

Key Responsibilities:

Offer emotional support and companionship through regular visits Listen and encourage as individuals navigate the changes and decisions associated with ageing or a dementia diagnosis Help identify and connect clients with local resources and support services Advocate for client needs and assist with tasks they may find difficult to manage alone Maintain open communication with Brella staff and report any concerns or observations

Qualifications & Skills:

Must be 19 years or older Kind, dependable, and non-judgmental with strong listening and communication skills Experience with or interest in supporting older adults, particularly those living with dementia Able to commit to a minimum of one year of serviceComfortable working independently and engaging in meaningful one-on-one conversationsClear criminal record check required (facilitated at no cost through Brella)

Training & Time Commitment:

Online Modules (approx 4-6 hours) In-person workshops (2 hours)Monthly Peer Meet-Ups (optional) Home visits with the client every 2-3 weeks (1.5-2 hours per visit)
