Volunteer: Seeking 2SLGTBQIA+ Volunteers to Support Queer Seniors

Position Title: Dignity Seniors Society We Are Familee-Rainbow Circle Volunteer

Length of Term: 9 months (renewable)

Approximate Hours: 8-12 hours/month (2-4 per week)

Reports To: WESN Volunteer Coordinator, DSS Volunteer Coordinator and/or DSS 

                     Rainbow Circle Supervisor

 
Program Overview:

The We Are Familee-Rainbow Circle Program a dedicated initiative aimed at supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ seniors to age at home. We recognize the unique challenges faced by seniors within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, including feelings of isolation, the need for culturally appropriate support, and the reliance on chosen family who may be facing similar challenges. Our program is designed to address these needs, offering inclusive and compassionate short term 1 on 1 support that improves participants’ culturally relevant community connections, support networks and confidence in aging in place.

The Rainbow Circle aims to empower 2SLGBTQIA+ seniors to age with dignity and receive the support they require by assessing their current needs and identifying ways in which queer volunteers can provide assistance in their daily lives. Senior participants are matched with a trained 2SLGBTQIA+ volunteer who fosters a supportive and meaningful relationship over the course of 3-4 months, helping to increase their connections and wraparound supports.

 

Position Description:

·       Offer a range of supportive services that enhance the well-being of the queer senior participant you are place with, including:

Connection to community resources, linking seniors with local groups, services,

events, and online support systems.

Social visits to combat loneliness and foster companionship that include chats, reading

Emotional support, providing a listening ear and empathetic understanding.

Taking strolls throughout the community, encouraging movement and autonomy.

·       Provide feedback to evaluate the Rainbow Circle Program structure and overall performance in achieving its objectives to ensure effective management and delivery of the Rainbow Circle Program

 

·       Build relationships with 2SLGTBQIA+/Senior’s service providers and community groups

 

 

Expectations and Responsibilities:

●      Participate in DSS volunteer orientation to become familiar with Dignity Seniors Society’s programs, policies and operations

 

●      Undertake the Rainbow Circle training and successfully demonstrate a clear understanding of the program and how to work with participants

 

●      Provide weekly visits to a 2SLGTBQIA+ Senior in the community and support as needed

 

●      Complete and submit visit reports after each participant visit

 

●      Attend monthly supervisions and/or group meetings to provide feedback an ensure you are supported emotionally and given any additional resources or information you need

 

●      Provide on-going evaluation of the program’s structure and performance

 

●      Understand and promote Dignity Seniors Society’s mission and values

 

●      Participate in special events relevant to the Rainbow Circle Program as needed

 

●      Adhere to the volunteer committee code of conduct, agreement and policies

 

Previous work, volunteer or lived experience with/as 2SLGTBQIA+ Seniors is encouraged. An understanding of mental health first aid, best practices for working with queer seniors and/or a valid first aid certificate are considered assets. Criminal record checks, interviews and reference checks are required prior to being accepted into the program.
