Volunteer: Come Read with Me Reading Program VolunteerLiteracy in Kamloops (LinK) is a community organization dedicated to promoting literacy for people of all ages in the Kamloops area. We work in partnership with schools, libraries, and other community groups to provide programs and resources that support reading, writing, and lifelong learning. As a Come Read with Me Volunteers you will build reading confidence and have fun! Reading Program Volunteers connect with students through one-on-one time with a caring, patient adult, building students’ self-confidence, improving their reading fluency and comprehension. This is the right role for you if you are someone who: Enjoys working with children Has good English language skills Is comfortable reading to others Are patient, encouraging, and reliable A Come Read with Me Volunteer’s main tasks are: Meet with assigned student(s) once per week during school hours Engage in reading activities using provided materials and strategies Encourage and support students in a positive and respectful manner Build a child’s reading confidence Experience working with children an asset but not required! Free training (learn about the program, practice reading strategies and games) and support is provided. Fall training dates: September 29th 5:30pm-8:30pm, October 7th 9am-12noon at the Henry Grube Education Centre Time commitment: Shifts are during school hours once a week for 12 weeks starting mid-October. We ask that volunteers commit to 2 hours per week. Volunteer: Adult Literacy TutorKamloops Partner Assisted Learning (KPAL) is an adult literacy program that connects volunteer tutors with adult learners seeking to improve their basic skills in reading, writing, math and English communication. KPAL serves learners from a range of backgrounds and life experiences, supporting them on their journey towards greater confidence, independence and opportunity. As a KPAL Adult Literacy Tutor, you will support adult learners in building foundational skills that help them achieve their personal, educational, and employment goals. As a tutor you will provide one-on-one guidance in a safe, respectful environment, creating real change through connection and support. Sessions are learner-centered, focusing on the learner’s goals, whether that’s everyday communication, employment, further education, or personal growth. This is the right role for you if you are someone who: Is empathetic, compassionate, and a good listener Has strong English language and communication skills Is patient and encouraging Likes to teach or mentor others An Adult Literacy Tutor's main tasks are: Meet with a learner (usually 1–2 hours/week) at a library or community space Support goals like reading, writing, basic math, or speaking Keep brief notes and share progress with the Coordinator Join a short orientation and occasional check-ins or trainings Training and ongoing support are provided by KPAL staff.Prior teaching experience is not required; strong communication skills, patience, understanding, and compassion are important! Time commitment: We ask that tutors commit to approximately 1–2 hours per week, usually for a minimum of 6 months, to allow for consistent progress.
