As a member of the Association of Neighbourhood Houses of British Columbia, Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House is part of a legacy of neighbourhood houses in the province that dates back 120 years and is connected to the international movement of neighbourhood and settlement houses. Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House is a community-based non-profit organization delivering publically funded services since its inception in 1968. Our purpose is to assist and empower community members to improve the quality of their lives through local programs and services, issue advocacy, capacity building, and community development.
Our mission is to make neighbourhoods better places to live & enable people to enhance their lives & strengthen their communities. In a neighbourhood with a continuing tradition as a first home for immigrants to Canada, FHNH is the first point of community contact, & a critical resource for successful adaptation & integration of newcomers.
Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House is a safe and welcoming place where neighbours come together in the “living room of the community”. We believe that every person entering our doors has both gifts to offer, and needs to address. These gifts and needs are as diverse as the community we serve, and with over fifty years of community development experience, we have developed a wide range of strategies and skills to bring diverse communities together in positive ways. A model we have used with great success is to develop a core group of change agents who learn skills in outreach, intercultural communication, inclusion, community development and appreciative inquiry. These leaders support one another to reach out to others and bring them into the community. Leaders reflect the diverse languages, cultures and other dimensions of diversity that make up our community. In this way, we are able to overcome potential barriers of language and culture and reach people who may not typically become involved in community life. This way of working with our community has become woven into the fabric of Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House and the specific activities and strategies detailed in the current proposal will be enhanced by this rich tradition of building connections.
