Who We Are

The Food Recovery Depot is run by one full time manager, one part time operations coordinator, and one volunteer coordinator. Our initiative would not be possible without the invaluable contributions of our dedicated volunteers, who are the heartbeat of our entire operation. We average 300 volunteer hours per month, and see vibrant community engagement from both volunteers and program participants. This dedicated volunteer commitment fosters a strong sense of community and ensures we have ample helping hands to achieve our primary goal: making healthy choices easier and more accessible for everyone. Another important aspect is witnessing the friendships that develop and the fun involved in working with a varied group of volunteers, ranging from very young to seniors, and everyone's unique perspective from different walks of life.

What We Do

Our vision at Healthy Kimberley is to build a healthy community by making the healthy choice the easy choice. Our Food Recovery Depot (FRD) is achieving this by recovering food “fit to eat but not fit for sale,” which diverts food waste, addresses food security, and improves the overall health of our environment. We fill a crucial gap in the community by helping manage food waste and directly benefiting residents experiencing food insecurity. We're Kimberley's sole food recovery organization and meal program, catering to vulnerable populations by providing free groceries and meals through 20+ agencies as well as directly to the community through a weekly Open to Public event. Using primarily recovered food to create delicious, accessible, nutrient-dense meals, we feed vulnerable community members through our meal program. Since opening our doors in 2018, the FRD has recovered over 600,000 pounds of food - with 84% deemed edible for human consumption, 16% distributed to local farms, and 0% going to landfill!
