Are you interested in being involved in working with a research team to guide research projects?
If so, St. Paul’s Hospital’s Department of Anesthesia is recruiting volunteers to be Patient Partners on our Patient Advisory Council (PAC)!
What is the Department of Anesthesia? Our department is based at St. Paul’s Hospital where we conduct research on various aspects of anesthesia and pain management of our surgical patients. What is a Patient Partner? Patient partners are patients, family members, and caregivers with lived or living experience that work with the research team during the research process. Rather than being subjects of research projects, take the next step forward and be a partner in research! What do Patient Partners do? The department’s research team holds virtual monthly research rounds where we discuss current, new, and upcoming research projects with the team. It is a space to get feedback and input from members of the team! Patient partners will be invited to these meetings, based on if their health care experience aligns with the studies being, and will take part in the research team’s discussion. Drawing from their experiences, patient partners can help shape research project methods or questions. What is the time commitment for a Patient Partner? We understand that our patient partners can have very busy lives, so we have designed the Patient Advisory Council to be flexible, ensuring it does not become an added burden or strain. Our monthly research rounds run for ~2 hours a month, but patient partners are not expected to come to all meetings. We will invite select partners to meetings where the studies are relevant to their experiences. Additionally, we will also try to schedule the meetings based on our patient partner’s availability! With all that considered, we expect the time commitment for being a patient partner to be <2 hours per month! Do I need a research background? Not at all, we do not expect our patient partners to be researchers! We value our patient partners for their experience as patients, which many of our researchers may not have. Although, we do provide optional supplementary guides, modules, and other materials for those who are interested in learning more about the research process - but these are completely optional and for your own interest! Qualifications of Patient Partners In order to be eligible to be a patient partner, you must: Be over 19 years old Have had surgery (either yourself, your family member, or your patient) in the last 2 years in BC Be a BC resident
What is a Patient Advisory Council (PAC)?
Our Patient Advisory Council is a group of patient partners! By organizing our patient partners in one group, we hope to have a consistent team that we can reach out to for valuable insights and feedback.
