pick up of hampers at Food Hub between 10-10:30;
then, delivering between 10:30-11:30
UPDATES: Fall changes:
September will make work and school life more complicated for many volunteers and clients. So, Food Hub will now be doing hamper runs every second week. For each delivery date, we will be packing and delivering double-sized hampers. If you have a very small car and cannot take double loads, don’t worry, we will work out alternate plans.
Thank you so much to everybody who helped out through the spring and summer, and welcome to new volunteers!
We’ll spread the word about this opportunity; feel free to spread the word, too! Word of mouth brings in more neighbours to help our neighbours.
REMINDER: Thank you for remembering to mask up! We’re in fairly close quarters when organizing and picking up/loading the supplies—we at CCFC really don’t want anybody getting sick or accidentally spreading sickness while doing this important work.
Chilliwack Community Services secured funds to keep Food Hub going beyond the original extension, right through the fall (and likely into the New Year).
These are the shifts for much of the fall season below.
NOTE: MORE shifts will eventually be added as planning for the winter is finalized.
The Details: The Volunteer’s Role:
The location address for Food Hub sometimes displays in odd spots on the page layout, so here it is: Salvation Army food bank buildings, right hand side of church parking lot at 46420 Brooks Ave.
Just arrive a few minutes early for whenever you’ve chosen a shift and all will be explained as you begin.
NOTE: Chris H had been sending extra weekly shift reminders, but it’s getting cumbersome, so that service will end now (sorry; but you folks are amazing and you remember anyway!). Please add reminders to your personal calendars.
15 Volunteers will be needed to do deliveries every second week
We estimate that each volunteer will have to deliver approx. 4-5 hampers, which should take approx. 1.5 hours to complete (including loading time on site).
Route maps will be provided.
Deliveries will be grouped close together wherever possible.
Clients that are requiring deliveries will be asked to be available from 10am to 11:30am. Knock or ring the bell as you drop off hampers while maintaining social distancing. If they are not home, we have been leaving the hampers tucked up against the door (not returning them to the warehouse). When leaving them isn’t possible, dropping the hampers off at the Salvation Army Care And Share building (on Yale) is the backup plan.
Broader details:
Through United Way funding to meet the food insecurity needs of local Chilliwack people that haven’t been served by other food hamper services, Chilliwack Community Services and Salvation Army are teaming up for this food bank initiative called the Local Love Food Hub.
Chilliwack Citizens For Change (Community Cares Initiative) is partnering with these organizations to gather volunteers to prepare and deliver 70 hampers each week.
