Description

Ever wanted to make a difference or share some local love in your community but didn't know where to start?

We're here to help! This easy Hi Neighbour volunteer activity will inspire others in your community to get involved!

What is a Hi Neighbour volunteer activity?

Hi Neighbour volunteer activities are self-directed new and easy ways to get involved in your community. And they're fun to do!

We've created accessible ways for individuals to volunteer and pay it forward through a number of activities that can be done individually or by connecting with like-minded people.

We're inviting the residents of Princeton to join our volunteer team and help us create a positive impact in Princeton. Sign up to be a part of Princeton's Hi Neighbour volunteer community!

Here's how this works:

Pick a location in your neighbourhood that needs some extra love.

Take before and after photos of your neighbourhood beautification project and send them to Princeton's Hi Neighbour's team, Tanya and Kaileigh. Share details of how you organized the clean-up, and they'll share it on our social channels. You and your project could be featured in iVolunteer's newsletter to inspire others to create local love where they live!

The activity:

You can do this activity on your own or with a group.

  • Select a neighbourhood park, greenway or road that needs some extra attention.
  • Share what you plan with your family or neighbours. You may need to check their availability to do this activity with others.
  • Select a date and time that works for everyone.
  • Send a reminder a week before the clean-up date asking family and neighbours to bring disposable gloves and a couple of garbage bags.
  • Send everyone a copy of the safety tips listed below

Safety Tips

Here are some tips to help you stay safe during your neighbourhood clean-up.

  • Wear appropriate and protective clothing according to the weather (e.g. boots, gloves, hat, sunscreen).
  • Be familiar with your clean-up area.
  • Only pick up litter during daylight hours.
  • Use a litter picker if you have one.
  • Watch for and avoid hazards, such as wild animals, insects, noxious weeds and glass
  • Do not pick up any material that may be hazardous, such as needles/syringes, broken glass, chemicals, dead animals and heavy/oversized objects. Instead, mark the location and call your local parks and recreation office
  • Do not walk on roadways or steep hills and embankments.
  • Be mindful of vehicles when near or adjacent to a road.
  • Do not enter water bodies to retrieve items.
  • Do not approach homeless encampments; report the location to your local city hall.
  • Do not trespass on private property.
  • Do not compress garbage or reach into garbage containers with your hands or feet.
  • Always put masks, gloves and other home health care waste in a bag before throwing them in the garbage.
  • If you collect recyclables during your cleanup, please recycle them.
  • Wash your hands after your clean-up.
