Description

About the event:

Abbotsford's Taste Around the World annual event is a gathering at Jubilee Park celebrating the rich cultural diversity within our community. This event brings together food and culture to promote unity and understanding. We aim to support newcomers as they share their cultural recipes and stories with neighbours, encouraging a shared understanding and sense of belonging. Through food, we bridge divides, promote empathy and enrich our community with the vibrant colours of multiculturalism.

Why volunteer?

Volunteering at events such as Taste Around the World offers a fulfilling experience that cultivates connection and personal growth. By volunteering, you celebrate and promote cultural diversity, make a positive impact in Abbotsford, support newcomers in sharing their heritage, learn about different cultures, meet new people, and help create an inclusive community where everyone feels welcome

This opportunity is perfect for anyone passionate about cultural diversity, community building and making a difference. Whether you're a student, a professional or a retiree, your unique skills and experiences can contribute to the success of this event!

About the role:

We need  volunteers to 15 volunteers to help with the following general event-related tasks:

  • Help set up before and tear down after the event. This also includes cleaning up the park after the event.
  • Help unload trucks, organize materials and ensure everything is in place for the event.
  • Welcome attendees and help create a warm, friendly and inclusive environment.

Volunteer safety:

We prioritize the safety of our volunteers. Here are a few tips to help you volunteer safely during this event:

Volunteering outdoors in the summer:

  • Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water throughout the day
  • Wear sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat to protect yourself from the sun
  • Dress in light, breathable clothing and wear comfortable, close-toed shoes
  • Take regular breaks in the shade to avoid overheating
  • If you feel heat exhaustion (dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating), seek shade and rehydrate. If you continue to feel ill, seek help from a first aid attendant or the event coordinator.

Safety guidelines for lifting heavy objects:

  • Before lifting, make sure you know where you're going and that the path is clear of obstacles
  • Lift with your legs and not your back. Bend your knees and keep your back straight. Use the strength of your legs to lift
  • Keep the load as close as possible to your body to reduce the strain on your back
  • Turn your whole body by moving your feet instead of twisting your torso
  • Don't overexert yourself.
