About the Point-in-Time Count
Everyone counts.
Point in Time Counts (PiT) are a community-level snapshot conducted every 1-3 years through a survey of people facing homelessness in our communities. The purpose of the Count is to estimate the minimum number of people experiencing homelessness on a typical day/night.
Information gathered during the PiT Count helps communities make informed decisions about community supports and programs. It also helps communities and agencies to better understand pathways into homelessness to strengthen prevention services, identify over-represented populations experiencing homelessness, as well as direct resources to areas of greatest need.
Who We Are
Snuneymuxw First Nation in partnership with Nanaimo’s Systems Planning Organization, with support from United Way BC and the City of Nanaimo, will conduct a PiT Count this Fall.
The Point-In-Time Count, funded by Reaching Home: Canada’s Homelessness Strategy and the Nanaimo Reaching Home Community Advisory Board, is a community-driven initiative. Its success relies greatly on the participation of community and a large number of volunteers.
Volunteer Roles Needed to Fill
1. Survey Count (drive to location, car is needed)
2. Survey Count (walk to location, no car is needed)
3. Assemble surveys
4. Site location set-up and take-down
What to Expect
While there are a variety of volunteer roles, many will be required to engage with individuals who are experiencing homelessness, precariously housed, and/or experiencing trauma. Volunteers may encounter emotionally charged situations.
Volunteers conducting surveys are required to undertake one of the training sessions to obtain a better understanding and knowledge of a trauma informed approach, as well as cultural considerations and appropriateness.
A closing session will be held for volunteers to debrief and emotionally process what they’ve heard.
