Description:
Would you like to help new Canadians settle into their new community? Be part of a small group (2-4) of volunteers who are matched (by DIVERSEcity staff) with a newcomer family, to support them on their local settlement journey. As a team, you will provide holistic settlement support through general community introductions and orientation, connection to resources, language practice, and social integration (familiarizing them with the transit system, navigating childcare, finding a family doctor, etc.). Volunteers may also join their matched family at staff-led monthly Conversation Circle activities, supporting them in the development of conversational English.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Encourage your matched family to participate in Conversation Circle activities and join them if they ask.
- Show family members how to navigate in person and online services, such as healthcare, housing, banking, etc.
- Share your knowledge about Canada
- Accompany your matched family members in the community to familiarize them with local services, resources, and spaces (parks, recreation centres, stores, financial institutions, bus stops, community service providers, etc.)
- Volunteers can take turns visiting and can share in the group’s members according to volunteers’ availability.
- Weekly interaction, minimum (4-8 hours a month).
