Description

The Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Society (KAFS) provides culturally appropriate programming and inclusive one-to-one services that meet the needs of urban Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to become healthier physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. KAFS has three separate locations that serve children, youth, and families seeking a wide variety of support.   

As a volunteer with KAFS, you’ll be part of meaningful, front-line work alongside children, youth, families, and Elders. You’ll have opportunities to learn about Indigenous culture, Canada’s colonial history, and human service practices while building connections that support both community and personal growth. 

Please note that after applying through iVolunteer, Volunteers will be asked to complete a volunteer package.

A Cultural & Program Support Volunteer’s main tasks are:  

  • Keeping locations clean and organized   

  • Help with preparing for community events 

  • Assist in the running/ coordination of events 

  • Setting up and taking down materials and equipment  

  • Facilitating and assisting staff to run child, youth, adult, and Elder programming  

  • Assisting in providing documentation 

  • Assembling and distributing program information 

  • Other tasks related to delivering front-line services and walking alongside those in need   

Training & Experience 
Previous experience working with children, youth, adults, Elders, or Indigenous families is preferred but not required. Training opportunities are available, and volunteers are supported to learn human service values such as confidentiality, trauma-informed practice, respect, and reflexivity. 

Time Commitment 

Monday to Friday programming runs year-round, with additional opportunities at community events and special trips on weekends or multiple days (e.g., youth camps, Elder journeys, Powwows). 

Volunteering in this role offers you:

  • Front-line experience supporting children, youth, and families. 

  • Learning Indigenous ways of being, thinking, and doing. 

  • Gaining insight into social work values and concepts such as power, positionality, privilege, and social location. 

  • Developing leadership skills and experience in facilitating group programming. 

  • Hands-on learning in making Indigenous crafts and artifacts. 

  • Collecting volunteer hours that can support employment, scholarships, grants, and awards.
