Description

Special Olympics BC provides high-quality year-round sport programs and competitions that help people with intellectual disabilities celebrate personal achievement and gain confidence, skills, and friendships. Special Olympics BC offers summer and winter sports for ages eight and up, youth programs for ages two to 18, Athlete Leadership opportunities, and health programs.

As a Sport Program Volunteer, you’ll support athletes directly by assisting the head coach during practices. You’ll help create a fun, safe, and encouraging environment where athletes can develop skills, build confidence, and experience the joy of sport—no prior sport experience is required.

This is the right role for you if you are someone who:

  • Enjoys helping others feel supported, included, and encouraged

  • Has patience and kindness when working with people of different abilities

  • Listens well and follows direction from program leaders and coaches

  • Brings a positive attitude

  • Is reliable and able to show up regularly

A Sport Program Volunteer’s main tasks are:

  •  Following the guidance and instructions of the head coach during practices

  •  Encourage the athletes to try their best

  •  Helping demonstrate or run sport drills and activities, as directed by the coach

  • Making sure athletes feel safe, included, and supported during practices

  • Assisting with simple setup or cleanup of equipment before and after practice

  • Being a positive role model by showing respect, teamwork, and enthusiasm

Training & Experience
No prior sport knowledge is needed, except for technical sports such as powerlifting, skiing, or skating. Head coaches provide guidance, demonstrations, and ongoing support for all volunteers.

Time Commitment
Volunteers commit to the length of a sport season.
Winter sports: October to March
Spring sports: April to June

Most programs run once a week for 1–2 hours, though some run twice a week depending on the sport.

Volunteering in this role offers you:

  • Experience working with diverse populations

  • Growth in communication skills and adaptability

  • The chance to gain sport experience and build community connections

  • A rewarding role that directly impacts athletes’ confidence and enjoyment

Additional Notes:
Consistency is important to the athletes. Volunteers who can commit to attending weekly practices throughout a season are especially valued.
